ULEZ Hits All of Greater London from August 29 – Don’t Get Caught Out!
The ULEZ (Ultra Low Emission Zone) is expanding to cover every inch of Greater London on August 29. Mayor Sadiq Khan’s crackdown on pollution means drivers must know how to pay the charge and check if their vehicles meet emission standards – or face hefty fines.
How to Pay the ULEZ Charge
- Where to Pay: Pay easily online at the official TfL website. You can pay up to 90 days in advance or until midnight three days after your journey.
- Cost Alert: The daily ULEZ charge is £12.50 for cars, motorcycles, vans, and minibuses under 5 tonnes.
- Auto Pay: Set up Auto Pay to automatically cover your congestion and ULEZ charges every month.
- On the Go: Download TfL’s free app to pay and manage your Auto Pay with ease.
Check If Your Vehicle Passes the ULEZ Test
- Head to TfL’s Website: Use the ULEZ compliance checker tool.
- Enter Your Number Plate: Input your vehicle’s registration.
- Get Your Verdict: See if your vehicle meets the required Euro emissions standards.
What Are the ULEZ Emission Standards?
- Euro 3: For motorcycles, mopeds, tricycles, and quadricycles (L category).
- Euro 4 (NOx): Applies to petrol cars, vans, minibuses, and specialist vehicles.
- Euro 6 (NOx and PM): Required for diesel cars, vans, minibuses, and specialist vehicles.
For newer motors, check section D.2 of your V5C registration document to find your Euro emission standard.
Note: Heavy vehicles over 3.5 tonnes, plus buses, coaches, and minibuses over 5 tonnes, are exempt from the ULEZ charge but must meet Low Emission Zone rules or face charges.
