Nestlé Recalls SMA Baby Formula Over Potential Cronobacter Risk
Nestlé has launched a voluntary recall of selected SMA infant and follow-on formula batches sold across the UK and Ireland. The precaution comes amid concerns over potential contamination with Cronobacter bacteria, former Enterobacter sakazakii, known to pose serious health risks to babies.
What’s Being Recalled?
The recall affects a wide range of popular SMA products, including:
- SMA Advanced First Infant Milk
- SMA Advanced Follow-On Milk
- SMA First Infant Milk (including 70ml ready-to-feed sizes)
- SMA Little Steps First Infant Milk
- SMA Comfort
- SMA Anti-Reflux
- SMA Lactose Free
- Alfamino
The affected batches cover both powdered and ready-to-feed formulas. The batch codes and expiry dates mainly range from October 2026 to October 2027. Some batches may also be available in Northern Ireland.
Check the Batch Code Before You Feed
Parents and carers should urgently check batch codes before feeding their baby any SMA formula. Codes are located:
- On the base of tins or boxes for powdered formulas
- On the base of outer boxes and the side or top of containers for ready-to-feed products
Safety First: Don’t Use Affected Formula
Nestlé says: “Consumers who have purchased affected batches should not feed the product to their baby.”
“The safety and wellbeing of babies is our absolute priority. As a precautionary measure, Nestlé is voluntarily recalling specific batches of its SMA infant formula and follow-on formula.”
Parents with affected products prescribed by a healthcare professional are advised to destroy the formula and consult their doctor for alternatives. Any concerns about a baby’s health should be checked by medical professionals immediately.
How to Get a Refund
Refunds can be claimed by submitting a photo of the product and batch code on Nestlé’s customer support page or via the careline numbers:
- UK: 0800 0 81 81 80
- Ireland: 1800 931 832
Nestlé apologises for the worry and inconvenience caused to families and caregivers.
Other Nestlé Products Are Safe
The company stresses that all other Nestlé products and SMA formula batches not listed in the recall are safe to feed. A full list of affected products, batch codes, and expiry dates is available on Nestlé’s website for parents to check carefully.
