UK Government Launches Bold New Plan to Tackle Bovine TB Crisis
The UK government has rolled out a wide-ranging new strategy to fight bovine tuberculosis (bTB), a stubborn disease ravaging cattle and wildlife alike. The plan features multiple initiatives designed to slash the spread of this costly infection and protect farmers’ livelihoods.

Experts Back The New Drive
Chief Veterinary Officer Christine Middlemiss underlined the challenge. “Bovine tuberculosis is one of the most difficult and prolonged animal disease challenges we face. There is no single way to combat it, and a refreshed strategy will continue to be led by the very best scientific and epidemiological evidence,” she said.
The plan is being shaped with input from farmers, vets, scientists, and conservationists. It also looks at beefed-up cattle testing, tighter controls on cattle movements, and broader badger vaccination coverage.
Unity Is The Key
John Cross, chair of the bTB Partnership, welcomed the fresh approach. “Bovine TB is the common enemy, not farmers or wildlife groups. Only by working together will we reach our goal,” he said.
On top of these moves, the government will expand use of ibTB, an interactive map showing TB risk levels across herds and regions – a vital tool for farmers and vets aiming to keep the disease in check.
