Isle of Wight Pride Cancelled for 2019 Amid Volunteer Shortage
The annual Isle of Wight Pride event will not go ahead this year, organisers have confirmed. A public meeting on Saturday at Newport’s Riverside Centre revealed the festival’s future after key committee members quit, sparking a desperate plea for volunteers.
Volunteer Crisis Forces 2019 Event Cancellation
The packed meeting saw locals rallying with offers to help, both for the day of the event and the organising committee. Despite this show of support, organisers announced that 2019 Pride is officially off.
“There is sadness in not holding a focal Pride event this year,” the organisers said. “But Pride is more than just one day.”
Plans afoot for a Stronger, Sustainable Pride From 2020
Focus shifts to a five-year plan to establish Pride as a permanent fixture on the island’s calendar. The aim: create a sustainable community event that Islanders can be proud of.
Activities throughout 2019 will include community events, school training, and support for the island’s marginalised LGBT+ community.
Bright Future and Big Celebrations Expected in 2020
With more trustees now onboard, organisers are optimistic about next year’s event, which will mark the 50th anniversary of the Gay Liberation Front.
“We still need volunteers for community events this year,” they added. “Plans for 2020 will kick off soon, aiming for something the Island will truly treasure.”
