Met Police Crack Down on London Protesters
Police arrested several individuals for breaching coronavirus rules, assaulting officers, and drug possession during protests in London.
Early Interventions to Stop Gatherings
Officers acted swiftly to prevent crowds from forming. Coaches carrying protesters into the capital were stopped, and those who refused to turn back faced arrests or fixed penalty notices.
Policing Commander Issues Warning
Chief Superintendent Stuart Bell, policing commander for the event, said:
“This was a tough day for Met, City of London, and British Transport Police officers. I want to thank them for their professionalism throughout.
“On Friday, we warned anyone planning to gather in London that police would take enforcement action. Today’s arrests are a direct result of individuals deliberately breaking the law, sometimes aggressively targeting officers and disrupting London’s roads.
“Our policing will continue into the evening. I urge anyone still gathered to go home now. Avoid enforcement action and help protect everyone during this health crisis.”
