Heron Ward set for £900,000 facelift to boost patient care

Major makeover for Heron Ward

The 19-bed Heron Ward is gearing up for a £900,000 revamp. Patients will benefit from a fresh new reception area and a revamped nurses’ station. The upgrade includes sleek new flooring and LED lighting designed to create a more dementia-friendly atmosphere.

Designed with patients in mind

Ward Matron Alison Read said: “We are excited to give Heron Ward a new lease of life, improving facilities for patients and colleagues. We’ve carefully planned the space to make it easier for patients to navigate and enjoy a more relaxing, comfortable stay.”

Senior Sister Bamlin Thomas added: “We’re refreshing patient rooms, and some singles will feature French doors opening onto the garden. This will especially benefit our end-of-life patients who can enjoy the outdoor space more.”

Temporary moves during refurbishment

The Kent Community Health NHS Foundation Trust now owns the hospital building following a Department of Health initiative allowing local NHS providers to take over sites from NHS Property Services.

Refurbishment work kicks off in May, with Heron Ward expected to reopen in September. During this time, inpatients needing rehabilitation will be cared for at Westbrook House in Margate by the same health team. Outpatient services remain unaffected — patients should attend their Queen Victoria Memorial Hospital appointments as usual.
