Wootton Bridge Shut After Shocking Crash Involving 90-Year-Old Woman

Wootton Bridge was closed earlier today after a serious smash involving a woman in her 90s and a silver BMW X1. Hampshire Constabulary emergency crews blocked the road between Kite Hill and Firestone Glade while paramedics and the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance rushed to the scene.

Woman Thrown Over Car Bonnet in Horrific Incident

The elderly woman suffered life-changing injuries after being thrown over the car’s bonnet. She was reportedly struck as she stepped off the curb, with witnesses describing the driver — a man in his 60s — not slowing down. One onlooker said:

“It was an elderly lady hit and then went under the wheels of an elderly man who was driving. He didn’t slow at all as she stepped off the curb. She was looking my way, not his, before he went straight into her. It was very upsetting. I had my child in the car at the time. I do hope the woman is alright. Lots of people rushed out of the Sloop to help and give her first aid.”

Emergency Crews Praise Quick-Thinking Bystanders

Paramedics praised members of the public who jumped to the woman’s aid before their arrival. The air ambulance touched down at the nearby Lakeside Hotel, where the helicopter doctor joined paramedics treating the woman in the ambulance.

The driver, also elderly, is currently receiving treatment from paramedics and being questioned by officers. Police are asking any witnesses or dashcam footage holders to call 101 immediately.

Road Reopens But Drivers Urged to Avoid Area Earlier

Earlier, traffic was stopped in both directions, with drivers urged to find alternative routes. The disruption affected local bus routes — but as of 8:48pm, Wootton High Street has reopened and Southern Vectis buses 4 and 9 have resumed normal service.
