Majority of Brits Taking Steps to Cut Carbon Footprint – But Say It’s Not Enough
A snap YouGov survey reveals 59% of Brits are actively living low-carbon lifestyles. Shockingly, 17% stick to green habits even when it’s a hassle. Despite this, nearly two-thirds (65%) believe the UK isn’t doing enough to slash its carbon footprint.
Climate Crisis: Urgent Action Needed Now
The world is already locked into some global warming thanks to human emissions, but acting now can still prevent the worst disasters. Professor Jason Lowe OBE, Head of Climate Services at the Met Office, warns: “We’re seeing more frequent extreme weather linked to climate change. The UK public are already engaged, but we need to do even more – and fast.”
He added, “To dodge the worst climate shocks, we must cut greenhouse gases quickly and adapt our lifestyles to cope with changes already underway.”
Extreme Weather Hits Home
The survey found 76% of Brits believe climate change plays a role in extreme weather events. The UK’s record-breaking 40.3°C heatwave in July 2022 underlines those fears. One third say climate change is fully responsible for such events; another 42% say it’s partly to blame, alongside other reasons.
Dr Camilla Mathison from the Met Office explains: “Cutting emissions has bonuses for health and air quality. Simple steps like walking or cycling short journeys reduce CO2 and boost well-being.”
Get Climate Ready with the Met Office
The Met Office is teaming up with partners to offer advice through the ‘1 Climate Ready’ campaign. It aims to show how small lifestyle changes can protect our planet and prepare us for the climate challenges ahead.
