Prisoner Sparks Blaze in Winchester Jail Cell
Emergency crews rushed to Winchester Prison last night after an inmate deliberately set fire to his cell.
Cell Barricaded and Set Ablaze
The prisoner barricaded himself in by piling books and furniture against the door before igniting everything inside. Firefighters from stations 1 and Eastleigh arrived at around 7pm on Romsey Road to tackle the blaze.
Staff Rescue and Firefighters Extinguish Flames
“When we got there, prison staff had managed to get the prisoner out of the cell and put the fire out,” a Hampshire Fire and Rescue spokesman said. “We went in to the cell to make sure the fire was properly out. We left at around 8pm.”
The quick actions of prison staff and firefighters prevented the fire from spreading further.
