Three Missing After Early-Morning Sea Collision Off Jersey
The Jersey Coastguard confirmed a grim search for a captain and two crew missing after a collision at sea near St Ouen’s Bay at 5:30 a.m. on Thursday. The vessel involved was the Commodore Goodwill, operated by Condor Ferries.
Fishing Boat Lost, Search Suspended Overnight
The fishing vessel is believed to have sunk in 40 metres (131 feet) of water, said Harbourmaster Bill Sadler. The search for the three aboard was called off overnight but is set to resume before first light Friday.
“Specialised diving units and an offshore construction vessel with a remote-operated vehicle will be deployed to pinpoint the wreck,” Sadler explained.
Community Pulls Together Amid Hope and Worry
Local fishermen have joined the emergency efforts in a show of solidarity. Don Thompson, President of the Jersey Fishermen’s Association, said, “There is still hope of finding survivors. It’s great to see all the boys out there banding together.”
He added, “One of the crew spotted wreckage on the water early on, which gives us a little hope. But it’s still a fluid, worrying situation. This is a tight-knit community — everyone is anxious but holding on to hope.”
Condor Ferries Reacts: Full Cooperation Promised
Condor’s CEO John Napton confirmed, “The Commodore Goodwill was involved in a collision with a fishing boat at 05:30 this morning while en route from Guernsey to Jersey.”
He added, “The master promptly alerted the Jersey Coastguard and has been assisting in the search and rescue operation.” The vessel was carrying five passengers and 24 crew at the time.
Shipping Rerouted as Authorities Coordinate Response
Commercial shipping has been diverted away from the search zone to aid rescue efforts. Jersey’s Chief Minister Kristina Moore sent her “thoughts and prayers” to the families affected on social media.
The Jersey Coastguard and Ports of Jersey remain at the helm of search operations as teams prepare to relaunch their efforts at dawn.
