Mass Evacuation as Power Pole Blaze Hits Isle of Wight Caravan Park
Firefighters rushed to a dramatic high voltage power pole fire at Lower Hyde Holiday Park in Shanklin on Saturday evening. The blaze forced a full evacuation of the packed caravan park, leaving residents and Easter holidaymakers stranded outside.
Holiday Park on Lockdown
A safety cordon was swiftly put in place around the holiday site. Fire crews from Shanklin and Sandown teamed up with Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue and Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks (SSEN) to tackle the dangerous inferno and secure the area.
Island-Wide Blackout
The fire triggered a major power outage, plunging hundreds of homes into darkness. Areas hit hard include Whiteley Bank, Wroxall, Godshill, and surrounding villages. SSEN confirmed 57 PO38 postcodes and 13 PO37 postcodes remain without power.
Power Restoration Underway
“We’re sorry for the loss of supply. Our engineers are on site working hard to get the power back on as quickly as possible. We hope that power will be restored to all 700 properties affected by 4am,” said a Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks spokesperson.
The island’s emergency services continue working through the night to get lives back to normal after this shocking outage.
