Fire Erupts at Rouen Cathedral Spire: Flames Spark Panic

A fire broke out at the spire of Rouen’s famous Gothic cathedral in northern France today, sparking an evacuation and emergency scramble. Dramatic images showed thick black smoke pouring from scaffolding near the 150-metre-high spire, stunning locals and visitors alike.

Massive Firefighting Effort Brings Blaze Under Control

Builders working on the cathedral spotted the flames shortly after midday and raised the alarm. About 70 firefighters and 40 fire engines raced to the scene to tackle the blaze. Fire brigade chief Stephane Gouezec revealed that plastic materials on the construction site caught fire, but thankfully the metal spire itself appears undamaged. Three workers suffered mild smoke inhalation but escaped serious harm.

Historic Cathedral Saved – Officials Mobilise All Assets

Mayor Nicolas Mayer-Rossignol confirmed “all public resources” were deployed to fight the fire. The spire, made of metal rather than wood, caught fire at its tip, the Seine-Maritime prefecture told AFP. The cathedral was promptly evacuated, and a secure perimeter established as crews doused the flames.

The Archbishop of Rouen praised the quick escape of four workers from the blaze. One worker reportedly told him, “I don’t think I’ve ever been that close to the good Lord but today, I say thank you.”

Rouen Cathedral: A Priceless Icon Under Restoration

Rouen Cathedral, immortalised in Claude Monet’s 19th-century paintings, is currently undergoing extensive restoration. Parts of this striking landmark date back over 900 years to the 12th century. It once held the title of the world’s tallest building from 1876 to 1880.

The fire at Rouen brings back memories of the devastating 2019 blaze at Paris’s Notre Dame Cathedral. After years of repairs, Notre Dame is set to officially reopen this December, promising hope for another cherished monument.
