Danny Kinahan Reappointed as Northern Ireland Veterans Commissioner

Veterans’ Voice Secured

The Secretary of State for Northern Ireland, Chris Heaton-Harris MP, has confirmed the reappointment of Danny Kinahan as Veterans Commissioner for Northern Ireland. The role is vital in championing fairness and safe access to services for veterans across the region.

A Proven Veteran Advocate

Danny Kinahan, a former Army officer, first took on the role on 27 August 2020. He previously served as an Ulster Unionist Party MP for South Antrim between 2015 and 2017 and spent six years as an MLA before that. Kinahan also co-founded the 1 and serves as Deputy Lieutenant for County Antrim.

Appointments Based on Merit, Not Politics

All Veterans Commissioner appointments focus strictly on merit and statutory criteria — politics doesn’t come into it. Following Nolan Committee guidelines, any political activity must be declared. Kinahan openly disclosed his past with the Ulster Unionist Party and his time as a district councillor but left politics before taking the commissioner role.
