Surrey Fire Engines Left Idle at Night – Residents at Risk
At night, fire engines in Guildford, Woking, Spelthorne, Egham, Painshill, Camberley, and Banstead will sit idle without crews. For serious house fires requiring firefighters with breathing apparatus, locals will have to wait for backup from far-off stations across Surrey.
Nighttime Fires Pose Deadly Threat
Night is when most deadly fires hit. Around 75% of fire deaths happen after dark, says Home Office data. Surrey’s own Equality Impact Assessment warns that longer response times “have potential for a negative impact on all areas of the community.” Simply put: help will arrive slower than before.
Vulnerable Groups Face Biggest Danger
The most at risk? The elderly and people with disabilities – groups already vulnerable in emergencies. Surrey County Council knows these cuts will hit these communities hardest. Yet, despite the risks, they plan to press ahead.
This shocking move leaves Surrey residents exposed, raising urgent questions about safety and council priorities.
