Silvertown Tunnel Set to Smash Thames Traffic Chaos
Transport for London (TfL) is about to revolutionise journeys across the River Thames with the brand-new Silvertown Tunnel. Linking Greenwich Peninsula and East London, this mega project promises to tackle the infamous “chronic congestion” dogging the Blackwall Tunnel for years.
Modern Marvel to Slash Cross-River Travel Times
Stretching 1.4 kilometres, Silvertown will boast twin tunnel bores – London’s first major tunnel build in over 30 years. Unlike its cramped Victorian neighbour, it’s designed for today’s commuters with wider lanes and plans to include walking and cycling paths inside.
TfL says drivers can expect to save at least 20 minutes compared to the Blackwall Tunnel, easing snarls on some of the city’s most polluted roads.
Opening Date, Costs & Toll Charges
Silvertown is slated to open in 2025, although TfL is yet to confirm the exact date. The price tag? A whopping £2.2 billion. Around £1 billion covers construction, with the rest spread over 25 years.
Mayor Sadiq Khan calls it a vital link boosting East London’s connectivity and TfL’s push to upgrade the capital’s transport network.
From summer 2025, tolls will kick in for both Silvertown and Blackwall tunnels. Early estimates suggest charges of £3 to £5 per crossing to keep traffic flowing smoothly.
London’s Cross-River Travel Gets a Turbo Boost
The Silvertown Tunnel is London’s bold leap into the future of urban travel. With cutting-edge design and serious clout, it marks a new chapter in beating gridlock and upgrading the capital’s transport mindset for decades to come.
