Smart Meter Scam Alert in Gosport: Trickster Targets Locals
Beware, Gosport residents! A dodgy conman posing as a smart meter installer has been roaming Stoke Road and Gosport Town, trying to bluff his way into homes.
Fake Installer Claims ‘It’s the Law’
The suspect knocked on a local’s door, claiming he was there to “sort your meters out ready for your smart meters.” When challenged, he insisted, “It’s government law, everyone’s got to have them.” The resident hadn’t requested any smart meter and asked which company he represented.
He said “E Energy” and half-heartedly flashed a lanyard. When the resident mentioned Southern Electric, the man claimed Southern Electric had sent him. The homeowner stood firm, refusing entry and saying they would call Southern Electric to verify.
Southern Electric Denies Any Link
Southern Electric quickly confirmed they had not sent this man and that their own meter installers handle all smart meter work—definitely not anyone from “E Energy.” The conman ranted, “You’ll be wasting both our time when they send me back,” before moving on.
Conman Seen Hitting Nearby Streets
The scammer was spotted trying other doors along Mayfield and 1 Road in Gosport. “E Energy” have a shady past with the ombudsman for deceiving customers. This isn’t their first rodeo.
Tip for residents: Always call your official energy provider before letting anyone in. If in doubt, don’t open the door to unexpected smart meter fitters.
