Southampton Airport to Serve as Temporary Mortuary Amid Covid-19 Crisis
Southampton Airport’s Grayson Site is set to become a temporary mortuary to cope with a surge in Covid-19 deaths across Hampshire, Portsmouth, and Southampton. The grim plan has been approved to help manage the expected rise in fatalities caused by the pandemic.
100 Refrigerated Trailers to Store the Dead
No buildings will be constructed. Instead, up to 100 refrigerated trailers will be positioned on the Grayson Site to serve as cold storage units for the deceased. The area is a secure zone, completely isolated from the passenger terminal to maintain airport operations.
Local Councillor Sean Woodford commented, “We must prepare for the absolute worst and work and pray for the best.”
Strict Security and Respect Guaranteed
Southampton Airport will keep running essential ‘Lifeline’ flights to the Channel Islands, with robust 24/7 security in place. Police patrols will be beefed up around the mortuary site day and night.
Officials have reassured families that their loved ones will be treated with the utmost respect. “All necessary precautions will be taken to meet the highest standards of health and safety,” said airport spokespeople.
Access to the mortuary site is strictly forbidden to the public, ensuring privacy and security during this difficult time.
Community Support and Preparedness
Agencies across Hampshire are working together to support communities as the crisis unfolds. Authorities emphasise the need to be prepared while hoping for a better outcome.
