UK Drivers Beware: France Cracks Down with New Emission Stickers
This summer, millions of UK travellers are hitting the road and sea routes to Europe. But the RAC warns Brits taking their own cars abroad: Ignore France’s strict new air quality laws, and you could face hefty fines of up to €180 (£154).
France’s Clean Air Zones Tighten the Reins
France, the UK’s top holiday hotspot, now enforces pollution limits in 12 zones nationwide. From July, Bordeaux and Clermont-Ferrand join the list demanding the proper Crit’Air Air Quality Certificate sticker on your windscreen. Without it, you’re risking a fine.
The sticker you need depends on your vehicle’s pollution level. Electric and hydrogen cars get a green Crit’Air ‘0’. The dirtiest diesels must display a dark grey ‘5’. Each colour shows how clean your car is.
Paris tops the strictest list, only allowing cars with Crit’Air ‘0, ‘1’, or ‘2’ to access certain roads at specific times. Aix-Marseille-Provence, Toulouse, and Reims follow with slightly looser rules, permitting stickers up to ‘3’.
