Surrey Council Slams ULEZ Expansion

Surrey Council has hit out over the planned Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) expansion, warning it could hit communities and businesses hard, especially in Elmbridge, Epsom and Ewell, and Spelthorne.

Council Demands Action to Ease Financial Blow

In a July 2022 consultation response, the council fired off several demands to the Mayor and TfL to soften the impact. Suggestions included:

  • Extending the car scrappage scheme to Surrey residents
  • Expanding the Zone 6 Oyster Card benefits
  • Exemptions for key workers, students, and taxi drivers
  • Funding for active travel and public transport
  • Clear, advance signage for motorists

No Response from TfL, Surrey Stands Firm

So far, TfL has ignored the council’s recommendations. Surrey County Council demands practical talks before allowing the installation of ULEZ warning signs around the Surrey border.

Without constructive discussions on mitigation measures that support Surrey residents, the council refuses to cooperate with TfL or the Mayor.
