Wildfires Rage Across Turkey’s Aegean and Mediterranean Coasts
Nearly 70 wildfires have erupted across 17 Turkish provinces this week, fueled by scorching heat and fierce winds.
Fires Contained But Still Blazing in Key Areas
Turkey’s government announced by Friday morning that 57 of the fires were either contained or fully extinguished. However, Forestry Minister Bekir Pakdemirli warned flames continue to burn in Osmaniye, Kayseri, Kocaeli, Adana, Mersin, and Kutahya provinces.
Popular tourist hotspots in Antalya and Mugla remain on high alert as blazes persist.
“We were hoping to contain some of the fires as of this morning but while we say cautiously that they are improving, we still cannot say they are under control,” Pakdemirli said.
Villages Evacuated as Flames Close In
Villagers and hotel guests have been forced to flee as fire nears homes and resorts. Television footage shows desperate residents running across fields with smoke billowing behind them.
Massive firefighting efforts are underway, with three planes, nine drones, 38 helicopters, 680 firefighting vehicles, and 4,000 personnel battling the flames.
International Support and Calls for Accountability
Russia has sent three giant aircraft to assist. Turkey’s neighbour, also facing wildfires, has offered help.
Officials vow to prosecute anyone responsible for starting the fires.
Casualties in Manavgat and Marmaris
Tragedy struck near Manavgat, a tourist hotspot 45 miles east of Antalya, where a blaze has killed three people. Another victim was found dead in Marmaris, 180 miles west of Manavgat.
Though fires continue in Marmaris, authorities say residential areas are safe for now, but evacuations, including hotels, remain in effect.
