Slip Road Closure on M2 and A249 Extended Despite Assurances
The four-month closure of two slip roads linking the M2 and A249 has been pushed back by ten days. This comes just days after National Highways claimed recent weather wouldn’t delay reopening.
Surfacing Done, But Reopening Still Pushed to January 23
Although surfacing work wrapped up as scheduled, final white lining couldn’t be completed due to poor weather. The slip roads now won’t open until Monday, January 23 — a whole 10 days later than first promised.
“We’re making good progress with the construction of the new coastbound slip roads,” a National Highways spokesperson said. “Unfortunately, due to the recent weather, we’ve been unable to complete the final surfacing and white lining as originally planned. We need to keep the slip roads closed a little longer.” “We’ll reopen by January 23, weather permitting, and continue working with local authorities and emergency services during all closures.”
Weekend A249 Closures and Detours Add to Motorist Frustration
- A249 Sheppey-bound will be closed from 8 p.m. Fridays to 5 a.m. Mondays on several weekends through early March.
- Maidstone-bound A249 lanes will also face closures at the same time.
- Drivers headed to Sheppey from Stockbury roundabout will be diverted via Maidstone Road, Chestnut Street, and Sheppey Way.
£92 Million Stockbury Flyover Upgrade Nears Completion
National Highways has finished widening the Stockbury flyover, linking the A249 to the M2 at junction 5. Despite the disruptions, the project remains on track.
“We appreciate these roadworks may cause delays and disruption, and are grateful for people’s patience,” National Highways said. “Any weather delays have not impacted the project’s completion date.”
