Slip Road Chaos: M2-A249 Closure Prolonged Despite Earlier Promises
Slip Roads Stay Shut Until January 23
The four-month closure of two crucial slip roads between the M2 and the A249 has been pushed back, reopening now set for Monday, January 23. This is a full 10 days later than National Highways initially promised.
National Highways had confidently announced last week that recent snowy weather wouldn’t delay the reopening, aiming for January 13. But just days later, they admitted the finish line had moved.
Weather Woes Block Final Works
A National Highways spokesman said: “We’re making good progress with the new coastbound slip roads. Unfortunately, due to the recent weather, we’ve been unable to complete the final surfacing and white lining as planned.”
He added: “This means the slip roads need to stay closed a little longer. We’re now planning to reopen by January 23, weather permitting.”
More Weekend Road Closures to Come
- The A249 Sheppey-bound will be closed Friday 8pm to Monday 5am over multiple weekends from January 13 through March 3.
- Simultaneous lane closures on the Maidstone-bound A249 between Bobbing and Stockbury roundabout will also be in place.
- Drivers heading towards Sheppey from Stockbury will be diverted via Maidstone Road, Chestnut Street, and Sheppey Way.
Major Upgrade Nears Completion
Despite the delays, National Highways has finished widening the £92 million Stockbury flyover linking the A249 to the M2 at junction 5.
A spokesperson said: “We appreciate these roadworks may cause delays and thank everyone for their patience during this vital upgrade. The project’s completion date remains on track despite weather setbacks.”
