Chaos on M20: Long Delays as Kent Police and National Highways Tackle Traffic Snarl
Heavy Congestion Near Junction 8
Kent Police and National Highways are on the scene managing a major traffic hold-up on the M20. Traffic jams stretch 4.5 miles approaching Junction 8, with delays adding up to 50 minutes over usual travel times. Motorists are warned to brace for heavy congestion.
Clear Diversion Routes for Freight Traffic
Non-EU freight drivers must follow the hollow circle diversion symbol to avoid the jam:
- Exit the M20 at Junction 8.
- At the roundabout, take the 2nd exit onto the A20 eastbound towards Ashford.
- Follow the A20 through Harrietsham, Lenham, and Charing to the Drovers roundabout.
- Take the 1st exit to continue on the A20 towards the M20.
- Rejoin the M20 at Junction 9 roundabout, taking the 3rd exit onto the coastbound M20.
EU freight traffic should leave and rejoin the M20 at Junction 8 using the exit and entry slip roads as normal.
Plan Ahead or Face Major Delays
If you’re caught up in this closure, expect serious delays. Experts advise leaving extra travel time, considering alternative routes, or delaying your trip if possible.
