Freezing Winter Chaos Hits Scotland: Thousands Left in the Cold as Power Cuts Bite
Temperatures Plummet, Families Struggle to Stay Warm
Temperatures in parts of Scotland have crashed to a bone-chilling -1°C, sending families battling to keep warm through freezing nights. Harsh weather has plunged 2,800 homes across Shetland – including Voe, Whalsay, Brae, Yell, and the West Mainland – into blackout since early Monday.
Power Outages Expected to Drag On
Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks (SSEN) revealed cables snapped under heavy snow and ice, causing what they called “extensive damage” to the region’s electricity supply. Engineers warn restoration could take until the end of the week due to the treacherous conditions.
Keith Brown, Scotland’s lead resilience minister, warned: “It’s obvious many properties will be without power for days.” He urged residents to stay home, keep warm, and check on neighbours and loved ones.
Engineers Racing Against the Clock
Since first light, SSEN teams have battled freezing cold and hazardous terrain trying to reconnect homes. Mark Macdonald, head of SSEN Distribution in Shetland, said:
“We’ve restored power to around 1,000 homes today, but conditions remain challenging. A 70-strong mainland support team is now en route to help as travel restrictions ease.”
Roads, Schools, and Travel Slammed by Severe Weather
- Snow and ice have closed all schools across Shetland on Tuesday, with several shuttered in Aberdeenshire.
- The Met Office has issued a yellow snow and ice warning for Northern Scotland until midday Friday.
- Roads are treacherous nationwide, with RAC recovery crews reporting a 50% surge in breakdowns, attending 7,500 motorists on Monday alone.
- The AA has warned that many rural and suburban roads will remain uncleared and ‘dangerous’ to drive on in the coming days.
Meanwhile, Orkney and Shetland Coastguard teams have deployed mobile VHF masts to boost communications in remote areas hit hardest by the disruption.
Scottish residents are bracing for a long, cold slog as winter’s icy grip tightens and power outages continue to hit the region hard.
