Chaos on the M20: Three-Car Crash Closes 16 Miles

A massive smash involving three vehicles this morning has brought traffic to a standstill near Swanley. The serious collision happened around 6am on Wednesday, 16th October 2024, shutting a huge 16-mile stretch of the M20 motorway.

This key artery, linking the busy M25 and M26, remains completely closed in both directions, causing chaos for commuters across Kent.

Firefighters Pull Driver from Wreckage

Kent Fire and Rescue rushed to the scene with three fire engines and specialist Lukas cutting gear to free the trapped driver of a Smart car. The daring side extrication took place alongside Kent Police and South East Coast Ambulance teams.

“Kent Fire and Rescue Service has three fire engines in attendance, assisting Kent Police and South East Coast Ambulance Service,” a spokesperson confirmed.

Massive Delays Across Kent – Avoid the Area

Traffic remains blocked from Junction 1 (M25) to Junction 3 (M26), with the coastbound slip-road also closed. Queueing is backing up across the QE2 Bridge and choking routes through Swanley town centre and the A20 bypass.

Police warn drivers to steer clear of the area as severe tailbacks and long delays are expected all morning and likely well into the afternoon.

“Our patrols are at the scene of a serious collision involving three cars on the slip road from Junction 3 on the M25 towards the coastbound M20,” confirmed Kent Police.

Investigation Underway, Road Closure to Stay

The collision investigation unit will remain on-site until at least 2pm to carry out detailed scans and evidence gathering. For now, the lengthy closure stands firm.

Motorists are urged to seek alternative routes and stay tuned for updates on when the M20 will reopen.
