Government Slashes Student Loan Interest to 6% – Saving Borrowers £180 a Month!

Biggest Cut in Student Loan Interest Ever

The government is stepping up to shield Brits from soaring living costs and a shaky global economy. It has taken the unprecedented move to slash student loan interest rates, bringing the decision forward to ease the burden on Plan 2 (undergraduate) and Plan 3 (postgraduate) borrowers.

This marks the largest cut in student loan interest rates on record. A typical borrower with £45,000 student debt could save around £180 a month on accumulating interest, slashing the rate from an eye-watering 12% down to just 6%. Don’t worry – monthly repayments stay the same.

Minister Vows Fair Deal for Students

Michelle Donelan, Minister for Higher and Further Education, said:

“The government has always been clear that where it can help with rising prices, it will. I’ll always fight for a fairer deal for students, which is why we’ve cut interest rates from a predicted 12% to just 6%. We want our graduates to have peace of mind – their monthly repayments won’t change.”

She added that the cut applies immediately for those starting higher education this September, assuring new graduates they will never pay back more in real terms than they borrowed.

Stable Finances for Future Students

Unlike commercial loans, monthly student repayments depend on income, not interest rates or loan size. Those earning below the repayment threshold won’t have to pay a penny until their income rises.

This new policy, alongside wider reforms, secures the future of UK higher education, ensuring students from all backgrounds get world-class tuition without crippling debt.

Backing Brits Through the Cost Crisis

This interest rate cut is part of a wider £37 billion support package helping families survive the cost of living crunch. It includes:

  • £400 off energy bills for every household
  • Extra support for vulnerable families for essentials like food and heating
  • Changes to Universal Credit, National Living Wage, and National Insurance thresholds so people keep more of their paycheck

The government promises to keep fighting for British families against inflation and tough economic times.
