Arctic Blast Brings Britain to a Standstill
Britain is grinding to a halt as a brutal Arctic freeze triggers chaos across the nation. Airports from Liverpool to Belfast are paralysed by heavy snow, forcing hundreds of flights to be cancelled. Runways are blocked, leaving planes grounded and travellers stranded in the freezing conditions.
Rail passengers aren’t spared either. LNER warns against travel between Edinburgh and Aberdeen or Inverness as snow blankets the tracks. Wales faces major disruptions on lines between Llandudno and Blaenau Ffestiniog, Machynlleth and Pwllheli, while routes to Manchester Piccadilly via Shrewsbury are also hit.
Eurostar has advised passengers to delay trips between London and the Netherlands, with services unable to pass Brussels due to savage weather.
Bitter Freeze to Worsen Overnight
The nation braces for its coldest night yet. Temperatures are set to plunge as low as -12°C (10°F) in some areas. London won’t escape either, expected to hit a frosty -6°C (21°F) overnight.
Last night, Shap in Cumbria shivered through -10.9°C (12.4°F) – marking England’s chilliest night of the season. Scottish regions, already buried under more than 1ft 8in (52cm) of snow, remain under amber weather warnings from the Met Office.
Forecasters warn a “multi-hazard event” is looming this Thursday, bringing more snow, heavy rain, and fierce winds. Even southern England could see a dusting before a possible thaw with warmer, Spanish-style weather arriving by the weekend.
Health Alerts as Freeze Threatens Vulnerable
The UK Health Security Agency has issued an amber cold alert across England until Friday. The freezing weather raises risks of heart attacks, strokes, and chest infections—especially for the over-65s and those with pre-existing conditions.
“The forecast temperatures can have a serious impact on the health of some people,” said Dr Agostinho Sousa, head of extreme events and health protection at UKHSA. “We urge people to check on vulnerable friends, family and neighbours.”
The NHS advises heating homes to at least 18°C, staying active indoors to improve circulation, and wearing hats, gloves, and warm slippers.
The Trades Union Congress demands employers allow working from home where possible. “No one should risk dangerous journeys in this weather,” they warned.
Roads and Rail Lines Locked Down by Snow and Ice
Network Rail crews are battling to clear deep snow between Aberdeen and Inverness with ploughs, but icy roads have already triggered crashes. Drivers are urged to stay vigilant and take extreme care amid hazardous conditions.
Across the UK, snow-covered towns and buried railways paint a stark picture of a nation caught in an Arctic grip. Locals are braving the freeze as daily life nearly grinds to a halt.
