The firefighting world is in mourning after the passing of Malcolm Styles, a retired Surrey firefighter and revered Olympic torchbearer. He passed away aged 76, leaving behind a legacy of bravery and community spirit.
34 Years of Service to Surrey Fire and Rescue
Malcolm devoted 34 years to the Surrey Fire and Rescue Service, serving at their Reigate headquarters. Rising through the ranks, he became one of the service’s most respected figures, admired for his courage, leadership, and dedication to protecting the public.
In 2012, Malcolm was honoured by carrying the Olympic torch through Felbridge – a proud moment recognising his unwavering commitment to emergency workers nationwide.
“Being selected was a complete surprise. I feel very proud – it’s a real honour to carry the torch for Surrey Fire and Rescue,” Malcolm said at the time.
One former colleague paid heartfelt tribute: “RIP Malc, you can stand down now — your duty is over.”
Sportsman and Charity Champion
Malcolm wasn’t just a firefighter; he was a talented sportsman. He represented Surrey Fire in football, rugby, and cricket. His crowning glory was a gold medal for table tennis at the World Firefighter Games in New Zealand.
