The firefighting world is in shock after the death of Malcolm Styles, a retired Surrey firefighter and revered Olympic torchbearer, who passed away at 76.

Surrey Firefighter and Olympic Torchbearer Dies

Malcolm devoted 34 years to the Surrey Fire and Rescue Service, keeping communities safe before retiring. In 2012, he proudly carried the Olympic torch through Felbridge, symbolising the courage and resilience of emergency workers nationwide.

“RIP Malc, you can stand down now — your duty is over,” said a heartfelt tribute from a former colleague.

A Hero Both On and Off the Frontline

Known for his bravery and leadership, Malcolm climbed the ranks at Surrey’s fire HQ in Reigate. His nomination to carry the Olympic torch came as a stunning surprise, marking his extraordinary contribution to the community.

“Being selected was a complete surprise. I feel very proud — it’s a real honour to carry the torch for Surrey Fire and Rescue,” Malcolm said in 2012.

Sports Star and Charity Champion

  • Malcolm was a keen sportsman, competing in football, rugby, and cricket for the fire service.
  • He won a gold medal in table tennis at the World Firefighter Games in New Zealand.
  • Following the tragic loss of his wife to cancer in 1997, Malcolm raised £40,000 for Marie Curie Cancer Care, including a gruelling coast-to-coast charity bike ride with Sunbury Fire Station colleagues.

Community Leaders Pay Tribute

Kay Hammond, Surrey County Council’s Cabinet Member for Community Safety, said: “Malcolm served at all ranks and was an outstanding member of Surrey Fire and Rescue. He was a true local hero.”

Helyn Clack, Cabinet Member for Community Services and the 2012 Games, added: “The Torch Relay was about celebrating inspirational people like Malcolm who made a lasting impact on their community.”

Malcolm’s journey carrying the torch through Surrey towns including Egham, Felbridge, Redhill, and Guildford remains a proud memory for all who saw it.
