Surrey Firefighter and Olympic Torchbearer Malcolm Styles Dies at 76
The firefighting world has lost one of its finest. Malcolm Styles, a retired Surrey firefighter and celebrated Olympic torchbearer, has passed away aged 76.
34 Years on the Frontline
Malcolm devoted 34 years to Surrey Fire and Rescue Service, becoming a pillar of courage and leadership. Based at the Reigate headquarters, he climbed the ranks and earned the respect of his peers and the community alike.
In 2012, Malcolm carried the Olympic torch through Felbridge, a fitting tribute to his dedication. Speaking then, he said, “Being selected was a complete surprise. I feel very proud — it’s a real honour to carry the torch for Surrey Fire and Rescue.”
“RIP Malc, you can stand down now — your duty is over,”
said a former colleague, capturing the deep affection felt across the service.
Sporting Star and Charity Champion
Off duty, Malcolm was a sportsman through and through. He proudly represented his fire service in football, rugby, and cricket, and snagged a gold medal at the World Firefighter Games in New Zealand for table tennis.
Tragedy struck in 1997 with the loss of his wife to cancer, but Malcolm turned grief into action. He raised a remarkable £40,000 for Marie Curie Cancer Care, including a gruelling coast-to-coast cycling challenge with colleagues from Sunbury Fire Station.
Remembering a True Local Hero
Surrey County Council’s Cabinet Member for Community Safety, Kay Hammond, paid tribute: “Malcolm served at all ranks and was an outstanding member of Surrey Fire and Rescue. He was a true local hero.”
Helyn Clack, Cabinet Member for Community Services and the 2012 Games, added: “The Torch Relay was about celebrating inspirational people like Malcolm who made a lasting impact on their community.”
Malcolm’s Olympic torch route through Surrey towns like Egham, Felbridge, Redhill, and Guildford remains a proud memory for many.
