Two Avon and Somerset cops nominated for National Bravery Awards after motorway rescue
Heroic motorway rescue
Two brave officers from Avon and Somerset Police have been shortlisted for the National Police Bravery Awards 2024. Police Sergeant Nick Dalrymple and Police Constable Mitchell Raymond risked their lives to save a distressed man standing in the middle of the busy M5 motorway on Avonmouth Bridge.
Life on the line
On May 28, 2023, PS Dalrymple arrived first at the tense scene, spotting a man dangerously positioned between lanes on the southbound carriageway. Without hesitation, Dalrymple switched on emergency lights and sirens to slow traffic, but the threat remained critical.
PC Raymond, off-duty and passing by, instantly joined the rescue. Using his protective gear and PAVA spray, he safely detained the man showing signs of self-harm. Their quick actions prevented a potential catastrophe on the motorway.
Praise and recognition
Both officers were awarded the Chief Constable’s Commendation in November 2023. Their courage also earned them a prized nomination for the National Police Bravery Awards 2024.
“Their actions on a busy motorway, facing oncoming vehicles, saved a man from serious harm or death and protected the public,” said Avon and Somerset Police Federation Vice Chair Iain Prideaux.
Chief Constable Sarah Crew added, “They embody our values of caring and courage and are a credit to policing.”
A reminder of police bravery
The nomination of PS Dalrymple and PC Raymond highlights the life-saving risks officers take daily to keep communities safe. Their heroic motorway rescue stands as a stark reminder of police dedication and bravery at its finest.
