Teen Rap Star Charnae Samuels-Stevenson Wins Big
At just 17, Charnae Samuels-Stevenson is making waves. She’s taken to the stage at major events, performed in front of hundreds, and writes her own raw, honest songs.
Drawing from tough life experiences, Charnae is carving out a promising music career and has just bagged the coveted Young Performer of the Year award.
From Hardship to Headliner
The award is part of the Live Our Best Life Awards, celebrating young people who overcome adversity and inspire others. Charnae’s journey is nothing short of inspiring.
“When I was little, I’d watch my dad make music and write songs. I always wanted to do the same,” Charnae revealed.
“I’ve been singing and rapping since I was nine. On stage, I can release all my emotions—it’s like my comfort zone.”
“Talking about problems face to face is tough, so I put everything into my music instead.”
“When I was five, we lost our family home. We’ve never really had a proper place since. I’ve never had what most kids have.”
“I just want to be there for my family and make things feel normal again.”
From Knife Crime Gigs to Film Star
Charnae’s early gigs included a knife crime event where her rap struck a chord. Inspired by an instrumental she heard wandering in town, she penned a song about her life and struggles.
“The song’s about my dad, my childhood, and the ups and downs my family’s been through,” she explains. “I wanted the world to hear it.”
Her talents didn’t stop at music. After being expelled from mainstream school, Charnae found a new path at Stone Soup Academy, where she landed a leading role in a film.
“Acting wasn’t something I considered, but when teachers asked me, I went for it. I enjoyed it and want to keep pursuing it,” she said.
“I want to collaborate more and push myself because I know I have what it takes. I want to make my family proud.”
Community Praises Young Star’s Impact
The awards, launched as part of Stephen Lawrence Day, spotlight inspiring Nottinghamshire youth. Romel Davis, youth outreach worker and awards founder, praised Charnae’s powerful storytelling.
“I first saw Charnae perform at a knife crime event. Her song really connected with everyone and told a meaningful story,” Romel said.
“Winning this award is well-deserved. Her music touches people because it speaks of real struggles many face.
