UK Pledges £500,000 to Caribbean After Hurricane Beryl Wrecks Havoc

The UK Government is stepping up with a hefty £500,000 aid package to help Caribbean nations battered by Hurricane Beryl. Foreign Secretary David Lammy announced the cash injection today to fund urgent relief for those hit hardest by the storm.

Early Season Hurricane Brings Devastation

Hurricane Beryl made history as the earliest Category 5 hurricane recorded in the Atlantic. It tore through the region causing widespread damage. The UK’s financial support aims squarely at helping families who have lost homes and livelihoods in the chaos.

Emergency Supplies Already on the Ground

  • 800 emergency shelter kits dispatched to Grenada and St Vincent and the Grenadines – enough for 4,000 people
  • 1,620 buckets for water collection shipped from UK pre-positioned stocks

These islands were hit hardest earlier this week, with homes destroyed and communities left powerless.

UK Teams and Naval Support Mobilised

In response to Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency calls, the UK has sent specialist regional teams to assist with rescue and recovery. Tasks include emergency operations, relief efforts, telecoms, logistics, and security.

Royal Navy patrol ship HMS Trent has docked in the Cayman Islands to provide vital support. Two Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office Rapid Deployment Teams are on the ground offering consular help to British nationals. A procurement and logistics expert is also assisting the humanitarian push.

“Our thoughts remain with those who have lost loved ones, their homes or have been left without power,” said Foreign Secretary David Lammy. “This funding will speed disaster recovery as part of a swift and coordinated response. That such a storm developed so early shows we face a climate emergency and must act now.”

Long-Term Climate Commitment

The UK is also backing Caribbean resilience through the £350 million UK-Caribbean Infrastructure Fund. This programme builds climate-proof ports, roads, and water systems. It supports disaster risk financing and insurance schemes to fast-track recovery after natural disasters.

This latest aid boost underlines London’s ongoing commitment to helping Caribbean nations confront the growing threat of climate change and extreme weather.
