UK to Ban Junk Food Ads on TV Before 9pm from 2025
The UK government has confirmed a hard-hitting crackdown on junk food adverts. From October 1, 2025, no junk food ads will be allowed on TV before 9pm. The ban also extends to online platforms, with a total ban on paid-for junk food promotions aimed at protecting children’s health.
Labour’s Bold Move to Cut Childhood Obesity
Labour Health Minister Andrew Gwynne announced the plans on September 12. This policy was a key pledge in Labour’s general election manifesto earlier this year. Gwynne stressed the urgency, saying, “These restrictions will help protect children from being exposed to advertising of less healthy food and drinks, which evidence shows influences their dietary preferences from a young age.”
Which Products Are Exempt?
- Baby formula
- Diet replacement products
- Approved medicinal drinks
The government will provide detailed guidance on what counts as “less healthy” food. This two-stage approach aims to balance public health with necessary exceptions.
Experts Applaud Move as a Win for Children’s Health
The Royal Society for Public Health (RSPH) welcomed the announcement. Simon Dixon, RSPH head of policy, said the ban is “a step in the right direction.” He pointed out that improving childhood nutrition is vital for a healthier future generation.
This bold policy aims to reshape the UK media landscape, cutting kids’ exposure to unhealthy food ads and battling the childhood obesity crisis head-on.
