Workplace Stress Crisis: HSE Demands UK Employers Act Now
On World Mental Health Day, the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has sounded the alarm on rising work-related stress across the UK. Its Working Minds campaign is calling on employers to step up and tackle mental health head-on.
Entertainment and Leisure Sector Joins the Fight
The hectic entertainment and leisure industries have joined forces with the HSE. Known for long hours, unpredictability, and a large number of freelancers, these sectors face a mental health crisis. A survey by the Film and TV Charity found only 11% of workers feel mentally healthy in this industry.
New partners throwing their weight behind the campaign include The Mark Milsome Foundation, The Association of British Theatre Technicians, and The British Association of Leisure Parks, Piers, and Attractions. They join 23 others in raising awareness and pushing for workplace mental health support.
Legal Duty to Stop Stress in Its Tracks
UK law is crystal clear: all employers must prevent work-related stress and promote good mental health—no exceptions. Every workplace, big or small, has a duty to assess risks and put measures in place to protect workers.
Yet despite growing awareness, real action on prevention remains patchy. Stress, depression, and anxiety are now the leading causes of work-related illness across Great Britain.
Simple Steps Can Make a Big Difference
“Employers should regularly check in with staff to understand pressures and act early,” said Elizabeth Goodwill, head of HSE’s work-related stress policy team. “Common issues include heavy workloads, tight deadlines, and lack of support.”
Easy fixes like regular catch-ups, sharing responsibilities, and clear prioritisation can dramatically improve mental wellbeing at work.
Industry Voices Back Mental Health Push
- Samantha Wainstein, Chair of The Mark Milsome Foundation, vowed to make film and TV sets safe havens for cast and crew.
- Mig Burgess, Co-Chair of The Association of British Theatre Technicians, hailed the campaign as vital for promoting workplace wellbeing.
- Paul Kelly, Chief Executive of The British Association of Leisure Parks, Piers, and Attractions, stressed mental health is now a top priority after tough times for staff and customers.
For employers looking to tackle workplace stress, HSE’s Working Minds campaign offers essential guidance and tools to get started.
