Brighton’s Volk’s Electric Railway Scoops Top UK Award

Brighton & Hove’s Volk’s Electric Railway, the world’s oldest working electric railway, has been crowned ‘Railway of the Year’ at the Heritage Railway Association awards. Out of over 200 heritage railways across the UK, Volk’s Electric Railway stood out as a true national treasure.

City Heritage Honoured

Councillor Alan Robins, Chair of the Culture, Heritage, Sport, Tourism & Economic Development Committee, praised the railway as a vital part of Brighton’s heritage. He hailed the award as a well-earned nod to the tireless efforts of staff and volunteers who keep the railway running smoothly.

“This award highlights the hard work behind the scenes and the railway’s role in our city’s history,” said Robins.

The win comes shortly after the railway’s landmark 140th anniversary celebrations last August, marking a spectacular year for this iconic attraction.

Manager’s Praise and Easter Reopening

Volk’s Electric Railway manager James Barton expressed his excitement over the win: “It’s an honour to be recognised nationally. Huge thanks to our staff, volunteers, and visitors who keep the railway alive.”

The award shines a spotlight on the railway’s commitment to green, sustainable transport and its role in preserving Brighton’s rich cultural heritage.

Held in Brighton, the award ceremony brought the triumph home to the local community. Volk’s Electric Railway is set to reopen for the Easter season on Good Friday, 29 March, inviting visitors to experience the charm and history of this remarkable railway once again.
