Over 200 Londoners Join Charity Trek, Raise £25k for Life-Saving Defibrillators
More than 200 Londoners took part in the London Ambulance Charity’s first-ever fundraising walk on 8 September, raking in nearly £25,000. That cash will buy 15 crucial defibrillators for London’s most vulnerable neighbourhoods.
London Life Hike Backs Heart Starters Campaign
The inaugural “London Life Hike” aimed to boost survival rates for cardiac arrests in the capital. Participants chose between 5km and 20km routes, taking in stunning views of London’s famous landmarks. The walk kicked off at Battersea Park, where Life Hikers got vital CPR training and cardiac arrest awareness sessions upfront.
Defibrillators to Target ‘Desert’ Areas in London
The funds raised will help the London Ambulance Service stock up on publicly accessible defibrillators. These devices are game-changers during cardiac emergencies, dramatically improving survival odds. The charity is focusing on “defibrillator deserts” — deprived areas where access to life-saving kit is patchy or nonexistent.
London Ambulance Charity Boss Speaks Out
“Our first fundraising walk was a huge moment. We brought Londoners together to help save lives — all while enjoying incredible views of the city’s landmarks,” said Jess Burgess, Head of the London Ambulance Charity. “Every year, crews attend over 14,000 cardiac arrests. A third of those patients need a defibrillator. Quick access to these devices in public can make the difference between life and death.”
Recent London Ambulance Service data reveals significant gaps in defibrillator availability, especially in poorer communities. The charity plans to work closely with walkers, councillors, and community groups to install the devices where they’re needed most.
The London Heart Starters campaign, fuelled by the hike’s fundraising success, is set to save lives and improve cardiac arrest survival rates across the capital.
