West Midlands Firefighters Rush to Malawi Amid Storm Fury

West Midlands Fire Service (WMFS) has sprung into action, deploying crews to Malawi as part of the UK International Search and Rescue (UK ISAR) team. They’re responding to crushing storms that have devastated large parts of the country.

Malawi Declares Disaster After Storm Freddy Strikes Again

The Malawian government has officially declared a state of disaster across 10 southern districts. The call for UK aid came after Storm Freddy slammed the region for a second time this month, leaving destruction in its wake.

WMFS Leads the Charge in Flood Response Mission

WMFS isn’t flying solo. Alongside other UK fire and rescue services, a 27-strong flood response team has been dispatched. This follows hot on the heels of a massive UK ISAR deployment, when 77 members returned from earthquake-ravaged Türkiye just a month ago.

“Our thoughts are with everyone affected by the devastating cyclones that have swept across several countries,” said Wayne Brown, Chief Fire Officer of West Midlands Fire Service.

“Just four weeks after our volunteers were part of the international response to the earthquakes in Türkiye, they are once again preparing to help another nation in dire need.”

“UK ISAR volunteers from the West Midlands will provide a Search and Rescue Flood Response. As always, we are extremely grateful to them for answering the call and they will receive all necessary support during their deployment.”

“We will also be keenly focused on their health and wellbeing upon their return, having been involved in two deployments so close together.”

UK ISAR: Battling Nature’s Worst Across the Globe

UK ISAR teams have a track record of rapid responses to natural disasters worldwide — from hurricanes and floods to wildfires and earthquakes. This latest mission in Malawi underscores their crucial role in saving lives and offering hope amid disaster.
