Mary Somerville, 39, has tragically passed away two months after her husband, Jaime Carsi, 40, was killed by a suspected gas leak from a faulty fridge during their honeymoon in Mallorca.
On May 6, Somerville was found unconscious next to Carsi at a holiday home in the northeast of the island. Carsi, an investment analyst, was discovered dead in bed.
Somerville was immediately taken to the hospital in serious condition but sadly succumbed to her injuries at St Columba’s Hospice in Edinburgh on July 2.
According to previous reports from Mallorcan newspaper Última Hora, Somerville and Carsi had tied the knot just two weeks prior to the incident. They had flown from their home in Edinburgh to a family-owned house in the Cala Mesquida resort for their honeymoon.
Concern arose when the couple did not show up for a planned boat trip, prompting alarm. The Guardia Civil police force in Mallorca stated at the time, “Everything suggests that this was due to the malfunctioning of a gas fridge, which led to a carbon monoxide leak. The man was found dead and the woman unconscious. Both were found on the bed. It appears to have been a domestic accident.”
Iain Stewart, the executive director of the Edinburgh Interfaith Association, paid tribute to Somerville, remembering her as a warm and infectious person with a radiant smile. Somerville was known as a talented harpist and worked as a yoga and meditation teacher as well as a breathwork instructor at the non-profit Art of Living Foundation in Edinburgh.
Tributes from friends and acquaintances poured in, highlighting Somerville’s joyful and kind nature. Her sudden passing has left many saddened by the loss of a cherished soul.
An autopsy report revealed that Carsi died from carbon monoxide poisoning, confirming the suspicions of a gas leak.
The Foreign Office and the Guardia Civil have been contacted for comment on the matter.
