Peterlee Area Haunted by Skydiving Tragedies

This is the third fatal skydiving accident linked to the Peterlee area since 2016, raising serious safety concerns.

  • April 2024: Sam Cornwell, 46, died after his parachute failed to open during a jump at the South West Industrial Estate. He was filming for Sky-High Skydiving Peterlee.
  • September 2016: Pamela Gower, 49, from Hebburn, died during a charity skydive at Peterlee Parachute Centre. An inquest revealed she struggled to deploy her chute due to extreme G-forces from a high-speed spin.

Both tragedies have intensified calls for tighter safety controls at local skydiving centres.

Investigation Underway

Police are working with local agencies to probe the latest accident’s cause. The woman’s identity and exact circumstances remain unconfirmed. Authorities have urged anyone who witnessed the incident or has information to come forward.

Safety Warning for Skydivers

Skydiving remains a popular extreme sport, but officials emphasise the need for strict safety checks, proper equipment maintenance, and thorough training to prevent more fatal accidents.
