Worthing Goes Green with New Eco-Friendly Taxi Shelter
A Blooming Welcome to Passengers
Worthing has unveiled a brand-new eco-friendly taxi shelter right in the town centre, turning heads with its green credentials. This fresh addition replaces the old shelter on Chapel Road and boasts a Living Roof brimming with wildflowers and sedum plants. It’s not just a pretty sight – this nectar-packed roof is a buzzing haven for bees, birds, butterflies, and other wildlife, boosting local biodiversity.
Climate-Ready and Community-Safe
The benefits don’t stop at wildlife. The Living Roof helps Worthing fight back against climate change by soaking up rainwater, filtering out pollutants, and cooling the urban heat island effect that plagues busy towns. Plus, the shelter features improved lighting and better visibility, making it safer for vulnerable passengers late at night.
Council and Clear Channel Collaborate on Green Vision
Clear Channel UK installed the pioneering shelter, funded by Worthing Council. It’s the latest eco-upgrade following two Living Roof bus stops revamped last year on South Street. Councillor Vicki Wells, Cabinet Member for the environment, said:
“It’s fantastic that this taxi shelter has been improved to help support biodiversity. The Living Roof is full of goodness for passing pollinators. Sedum flowers are especially accessible for honey bees and I can’t wait to see it in a few months when the flowers begin to bloom – it will look fantastic.”
Branded Bright and Built to Last
Adding a splash of local pride, the shelter is decked out in the vibrant colours, logo, and website of the borough’s ‘Time for Worthing’ campaign. Clear Channel UK’s Managing Director, Will Ramage, said:
“The installation of a Living Roof on top of a taxi shelter is a fantastic example of the numerous possibilities these structures can provide. We enjoy seeing how local authorities utilise Living Roofs to showcase how we can be creative in making space for wildlife, even in our most urban areas, and we look forward to our continued partnership with Worthing Borough Council in the future.”
