Deadly Blast Rocks Iraqi Military Base Near Baghdad
A massive explosion tore through the Kalsu military base, about 50 kilometres (31 miles) south of Baghdad in Babil province. The blast killed one and injured 20. The base, used by Iran-backed Popular Mobilisation Forces (PMF), suffered heavy damage to buildings and vehicles.
Chaos and Destruction at Kalsu Base
The powerful explosion hit late Friday, unleashing chaos at the military site near the town of Iskandariya. Scenes from the aftermath show a huge crater and raging fires, with nearby trees set ablaze by the blast.
Who’s Behind the Attack? PMF Blames US
The PMF quickly pointed fingers at the United States, accusing it of carrying out the bombing. They called it an act of “American aggression” amid rising tensions in the region. The base has been a flashpoint in ongoing conflicts.
Iraqi and US Military Deny Claims
However, the Iraqi military reports no sign of drones or fighter jets over Babil before or during the explosion. They confirm one PMF fatality and eight injuries among their ranks but reject claims of an American airstrike.
The US military also swiftly denied any involvement. Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani, currently in the US, has called for a full investigation into the blast.
Strategic Base at Heart of Security Concerns
Kalsu military base is a key facility housing both Iraqi federal police and military forces. Its position close to Baghdad makes it vital for regional security, raising the stakes as questions mount about who triggered this devastating attack.
The probe is ongoing, with all eyes on uncovering the truth behind the deadly explosion.
