Victor Lafay Shocks Tour de France with Stunning Stage 2 Win
French rider Victor Lafay pulled off a sensational victory on stage two of the Tour de France at San Sebastian, leaving the cycling world reeling. The 27-year-old Cofidis star outpaced a top-tier breakaway in a nail-biting sprint, holding off Belgium’s Wout van Aert and Slovenia’s Tadej Pogacar to claim the win.
Thrilling Battle on Basque Roads
Lafay timed his attack perfectly during the brutal 208.9km Basque Country stage. “It’s crazy. I was hanging on at times today because that was fast. But I believed all the way and that’s what got me over the line,” Lafay said after crossing the line first. The decisive moment came in the final 500 metres, where he surged ahead and refused to be caught.
The stage featured a fierce duel on the punishing 8km Jaizkibel climb, with defending champ Jonas Vingegaard launching a fierce attack. Pogacar chased him hard, eventually slipping past at the finish to snatch an extra eight bonus seconds. This added fuel to the battle between the Tour’s top contenders.
Adam Yates Holds Yellow Jersey as UAE Team Dominates
England’s Adam Yates successfully defended the overall lead, keeping the prestigious yellow jersey after another tough day. Yates extended his lead to six seconds over UAE teammates Pogacar and Simon Yates. “This is why I came here. We have the yellow and the white, and we have to keep it going that way,” Adam stated, praising Pogacar for raising the team’s level.
Vingegaard trails by 22 seconds, while 2019 champ Egan Bernal sits 43 seconds behind. Australian Ben O’Connor lost significant time and now finds himself almost two minutes adrift.
Other Highlights and What’s Next
- Native-American rider Neilson Powless defended the polka dot climbing jersey for most of the day but was caught on the final climb. “I gave it my all. It’s the Tour, and I had to. I kept the jersey, and that’s all that counts,” he insisted.
- Stage three heads back into France with a 187km sprint from Amorebieta to Bayonne, promising another high-speed showdown.
