Violence Threats Force Protest Cancellation at Queen Mary University

A planned protest against a controversial United Nations official at Queen Mary University in London has been called off amid fears of violent threats. The Metropolitan Police confirmed they are investigating online posts threatening “Amsterdam-style” violence linked to the demonstration.

UN Official Francesca Albanese Sparks Outrage

UN special rapporteur Francesca Albanese, known for her divisive remarks about Israel and Hamas, was due to speak at Queen Mary University in Mile End, east London. Albanese has compared Israel’s actions to Nazi Germany and claimed Hamas supporters have a “right to resist,” stirring outrage among critics.

The Campaign Against Antisemitism, which organised the protest, cancelled it after a security review and police consultation. A group spokesperson said they are pursuing legal action against those who issued online threats.

The Met Steps Up Security Measures

The Metropolitan Police assured the public that “appropriate plans were in place” to keep the event safe. Officers will maintain a visible presence at Queen Mary University to protect both would-be protesters and attendees. They are determined to track down those making violent threats.

Similar Protests and Free Speech Debates Across London

Earlier this week, a similar demonstration took place at the London School of Economics, where Albanese also spoke. LSE reiterated its commitment to free speech and inclusivity.

Meanwhile, SOAS University, another venue scheduled to host Albanese, stressed it supports freedom of expression but will restrict speech that incites hate or violence.
