China’s military ramps up war drills
China launched intense military exercises around Taiwan following President Tsai Ing-wen’s meeting with US House Speaker Kevin McCarthy last week—a meeting Beijing had warned would trigger a strong response.
Over two days, Chinese forces simulated targeted strikes and effectively encircled the island. The drills included “sealing” Taiwan off, escalating fears of a blockade.
Notably, one of China’s two aircraft carriers took part in these operations, signalling serious intent.
US stokes tensions with naval patrol
Despite repeated US calls for calm, the USS Milius, a guided-missile destroyer, sailed through contested areas of the South China Sea on Monday.
China slammed the move as an “illegal intrusion” into its territorial waters. The US defended the patrol as a necessary show to protect freedom of navigation and lawful sea rights.
Local fears mount as drills near Taiwan
The upcoming live-fire drills near China’s Fujian coastline—just 80km from the Matsu islands and under 200km from Taipei—have many Taiwanese worried about a wider conflict.
Lin Ke-qiang, a 60-year-old chef in the Matsu archipelago, voiced common concerns: “We just want peaceful, stable lives. With China’s advanced missiles, if war breaks out, we have no chance. Our side will be flattened.”
Historic tensions fuel dangerous game
After splitting from mainland China in 1949, Taiwan remains a thorn in Beijing’s side, which still claims the island as its territory. The US, ambiguous on whether it would defend Taiwan militarily, continues to sell arms and offer political support.
McCarthy’s meeting with Tsai was meant as a diplomatic balance—showing US backing without overtly provoking Beijing. But China’s harsh warnings and stepped-up military moves reveal the fragile, high-stakes nature of this regional power play.
