Gaza Crisis Deepens as Israeli Strikes Leave Nearly 500 Dead
Death Toll Rises Amid Relentless Israeli Air Raids
The Gaza Strip reels from a deadly wave of Israeli airstrikes. Gaza’s health ministry reports 493 Palestinians killed and 2,751 wounded. In just 20 hours, the Israeli air force launched more than 800 attacks. Chilling videos show buildings crumbling and massive fires blazing across the territory.
Austria Cuts Billions in Aid Over Hamas Attack
In a sharp move following Hamas’s brutal strike on Israel, Austria has slammed the brakes on €19 million (£16.4m) in aid to Palestinian projects. Foreign Minister Alexander Schallenberg declared the policy shift a sign of Austria’s growing pro-Israel stance in the EU.
“After the shocking attack, we cannot continue business as usual,” Schallenberg said, announcing all Austrian development payments to Palestinian territories are suspended. The freeze lumps together aid to both Gaza and the West Bank under the Palestinian Authority, led by Mahmoud Abbas.
Germany Considers Follow Suit as Debate Heats Up
Across the border, Germany is mulling whether to pause its own aid to Palestinians. Development Minister Svenja Schulze stressed the importance of ensuring funds do not support violence. The government remains cautious but the Hamas attack has intensified calls for stricter oversight.
Israel Claims Control But Tensions Remain High
Israel’s military says it has regained control over communities near Gaza, but admits clashes continue around eight areas. Some Palestinian militants still reportedly operate inside Israeli borders. Northern troops are on high alert, though no fighting has yet broken out in that sector.
