Royal Navy Tails Russian Warship in High-Stakes Three-Day Chase
The Royal Navy has snapped and tracked the Russian corvette Boikiy as it prowled near UK waters. The warship wasn’t sailing solo—it was part of a convoy escorting the merchant vessel Baltic Leader from Syria back to Russia.
The Royal Navy’s Type 23 frigate HMS Somerset doggedly shadowed Boikiy for three straight days, monitoring its every move through the North Sea and English Channel.
Team NATO on Watch: Eyes Everywhere
It wasn’t just the Royal Navy working overtime. NATO forces and patrol aircraft joined the surveillance, ensuring the Russian convoy was under constant watch.
- HMS Somerset used its cutting-edge radar to keep tabs on the ships.
- A Merlin helicopter soared overhead, providing vital aerial reconnaissance.
- Suspiciously, the Russian crew were caught burning papers and manning machine guns—increasing tensions.
Baltic Leader’s Shadowy Cargo Sparks Concern
The merchant ship Baltic Leader reportedly hauled military gear from Russia’s naval base in Tartus, Syria. It’s no stranger to controversy: the US slapped sanctions on it in 2022 over links to Promsvyazbank, a Russian bank targeted following Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine.
Commander Sounds Off: “Vigilance in UK Waters”
“Somerset is well-versed in escorting Russian ships,” said HMS Somerset’s Commanding Officer, Cdr Joel Roberts. “Our crew has shown great professionalism, staying vigilant while working with NATO allies to monitor Russian activity around Europe.”
Rising Russian Naval Moves Put UK on Edge
This is the second time this year HMS Somerset has tailed Russian ships near British shores. Just weeks ago, the Royal Navy tracked a convoy of five Russian vessels steaming from Syria to a Baltic port.
Back in January, Defence Secretary John Healey accused Russia of ramping up aggressive naval actions after the spy ship Yantar was spotted nearby. Western intelligence warns Moscow is mapping undersea cables—a worrying threat to critical infrastructure security.
Moscow has flatly denied these claims, calling them “baseless.”
Tensions Soar as UK and NATO Keep Russia Under the Microscope
Since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, the UK and NATO have stepped up surveillance of Russian naval activity across the Atlantic and European waters. The Royal Navy remains on high alert, ready to respond to any Russian moves perceived as threats.
