The Home Secretary has hailed a beefed-up alliance with Rwanda as both nations pledge to ramp up the fight against global migration chaos.
Dangerous Journeys to UK Mean Relocation to Rwanda
Under the bold Migration and Economic Development Partnership, migrants risking deadly small boat trips to the UK will now be relocated to Rwanda. There, they’ll get support to rebuild their lives away from traffickers and perilous waters.

New MoU Expands Relocation Scope
Braverman and Biruta reinforced their commitment amid a migration crisis displacing over 100 million people worldwide and lining the pockets of smugglers. They updated the Memorandum of Understanding, stretching the deal to include anyone making illegal, dangerous journeys to the UK—even those passing through safe countries first.
This move aligns with the new Illegal Migration Bill introduced last week, which punishes illegal arrivals with detention and deportation to their home nation or safe third countries like Rwanda.
Rwanda confirmed it’s ready to receive thousands, providing housing, healthcare, education, and vocational training before moving people into longer-term accommodation.

This partnership breaks the business model of people smugglers while helping those genuinely in need to rebuild their lives.

Home Secretary Tours Kigali’s Refugee Projects and Start-Ups
During her visit, Braverman met refugees rebuilding their lives with Rwanda’s support and toured new housing developments set to host relocated individuals. She also visited modern accommodation facilities and discussed business opportunities with local entrepreneurs.
The Rwanda partnership is just one weapon in the UK government’s arsenal against illegal migration. Last week, PM Boris Johnson secured a deal with France for a new detention centre and boosted beach patrols with extra French staff and tech to snuff out illegal crossings.
