UK Slams M23 and Rwanda Troops for Storming Bukavu

The UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) has blasted the entry of M23 rebels and the Rwandan Defence Force (RDF) into Bukavu. Calling it a “serious violation” of the Democratic Republic of Congo’s (DRC) sovereignty, the FCDO warns this move risks dragging the region into wider conflict.

FCDO Condemns Sovereignty Breach and UN Charter Violation

An FCDO spokesperson declared:

“The entrance of M23 and the Rwandan Defence Force into Bukavu is a violation of DRC’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, and a breach of the UN Charter. This is a serious escalation that heightens the risk of a wider regional conflict – the human cost of which would be devastating.”

The UK government demands all forces withdraw from Congolese soil immediately to prevent further instability in the Great Lakes region.

Humanitarian Crisis Worsens in Eastern DRC

Conflict in eastern DRC has displaced nearly one million people. The M23 and RDF incursion has slammed vital aid routes shut, choking off lifesaving food, water, and medical supplies needed by hundreds of thousands.

  • Severe food and water shortages
  • Medical aid cut off for displaced populations
  • Heightened risk of disease outbreaks in overcrowded camps

The FCDO slammed the disruption: “It is appalling that vital aid routes have been cut off. All parties must restore humanitarian access as a matter of urgency.”

UK Demands Ceasefire and Rwanda’s Immediate Withdrawal

The UK has joined international calls for an immediate ceasefire and full withdrawal of Rwandan troops from the DRC. The FCDO stressed:

“There is no military solution to this crisis. Diplomacy and African-led peace efforts must take centre stage.”

London reaffirms support for regional peace processes, including the Nairobi and Luanda talks.

Global Outcry as Region on Edge

International alarm is growing with fears that conflict could explode into full-scale regional war. Major players have voiced their concerns:

  • United Nations: Condemned the breach of DRC sovereignty and called for calm.
  • African Union: Urged Rwanda and DRC to resolve disputes through dialogue.
  • US and EU: Warned against escalating tensions threatening regional stability.

Watch for:

  • Possible African-led diplomatic interventions
  • Moves to restore aid access
  • International responses, including sanctions or peacekeeping
