Wandsworth Man Jailed for 16 Years After Brutal 22-Year Abuse Rampage
Dean Martin Kelly, 39, has been slammed with a 16-year prison sentence following a harrowing 12-day trial at Kingston Crown Court. The Wandsworth man was found guilty of a terrifying catalogue of offences including grievous bodily harm, sexual assault, and threats to kill.
Shocking Charges Reveal Dark Abuse
- Grievous bodily harm
- Actual bodily harm
- Criminal damage
- Threats to kill
- Penetrative sexual assault
- Sexual assault
- Coercive and controlling behaviour
Kelly also received a four-year extension on his licence and an indefinite notification requirement after his sentencing on February 3 at the same court.
Victim Speaks Out: ‘I Suffered In Silence for 22 Years’
The victim endured relentless physical and emotional abuse over more than two decades. She bravely broke her silence in April 2022, leading to Kelly’s arrest.
“For 22 years, I suffered in silence, silenced by my own fear and too afraid to speak up, believing there was no way out,” she revealed. “The night I dialled 999 undoubtedly saved my life. After being beaten and sexually assaulted that evening, I was confronted with two kitchen knives and told I was going to be killed in front of our helpless children. I knew this man was dangerous and intent on taking my life.”
“From age 16 to 38, I was a victim of Dean’s obsessive and controlling behaviour. He treated me like property. It was the only ‘love’ I’d ever known but I now see it was never love.”
Horrific Details Unveiled in Court
On April 30, 2022, police rushed to the victim’s Wandsworth home after a frantic 999 call. Kelly had threatened her with knives, scraping and stabbing her legs. He yelled death threats at their three children, aged 10 to 21.
Police found the victim covered in bruises from sustained beatings. Over 100 photos were taken as evidence of Kelly’s brutal abuse.
Kelly’s vile actions included rape, sexual abuse, and humiliations like spitting on his victim and their children’s food, rubbing food in her hair, and attacking her with belts and headphone wires.
“Dean controlled every aspect of my life — what I ate, wore, who I spoke to, where I went, and my finances. He isolated me from family and friends,” the victim said. “He was supposed to protect us but stole our dignity, safety, freedom, and happiness.”
I’m grateful to the Met Police who stood by me. I urge any victims of domestic or sexual abuse to come forward. There is an escape. You don’t have to live in fear.”
Police Praise Victim’s Courage, Urge Others to Speak Out
Detective Inspector Simon Sherlock of South West Command’s Public Protection Unit commented: “Kelly dominated his victim’s life and subjected her and her children to horrific abuse. His actions are unforgivable. I applaud the victim for her bravery and urge others in similar situations to seek help.”
Officers PCs Lally Spoto and Tara Oram played key roles in safeguarding the family and ensuring justice was served.
